Our Story

The Business commenced in 1974 trading as Scorpio Meats, located in Heidelberg, Victoria operating a small beef boning room.

As a joint venture with two partners who were previously involved in the meat industry, one a farmer and the other a butcher, Scorpio was set up as a meat wholesale business to service butchers and small food take-away shops, and growing steadily over the first 5 years they found that a bigger factory was needed to operate from.

Scorpio Meats moved to a much bigger boning room in Braeside in the early 80’s from where they continued to grow as a domestic meat wholesaler and exporter, while starting to acquire clients in the food manufacturing sector. They also added the processing of sheep, lamb and veal to their product offering which contributed to driving up growth.

Maintaining that growth into the 90’s, the owners realised that instead of operating just as a boning room and wholesaler, there was more growth potential in further meat processing for manufacturers, and the value adding side of the meat industry too.

In 1994 another factory, a dedicated meat based food manufacturing and processing facility in the south east of Melbourne, was acquired at Dandenong South. Their first client, Heinz, was quickly on board and, buoyed by the knowledge and experience Scorpio Meats could offer they were quickly followed by Simplot and then, by Campbell’s Soups, et al. Heinz and Campbells still remain as major customers in an enduring relationship.

In 2008, the business was purchased by the Paterson family.

Changing the name to Scorpio Foods we have been dedicated to innovative protein based food manufacturing servicing the retail, food service, manufacturing, and export markets.

After 40 years in the industry Scorpio has moved into bigger and newer premises with plant and equipment to cater for our new cooking and processing systems, products, customers, and the changing industry direction.

In 2014 Scorpio made the strategic decision to relocate it’s meat processing facility from Dandenong to Colac. To compliment our Colac meat processing facility, Scorpio owns and operates a Coolstore in the central Victorian town of Shepparton. This plant operates as a contract chiller and freezer for the export market along with frozen storage for its customers.
